Safeguarding Your Supply Chain Against Rising Oil Prices

Have you considered what the fluctuating cost of oil could be doing to your supply chain? Maybe you are dealing with a fuel surcharge on your logistics invoice or are experiencing increased component and operating costs? In any instance, as the price per barrel changes on a daily basis, you need to be concerned with more than just the prices at the pump. The challenges that ensue can negatively impact your supply chain if your infrastructure is not equipped to handle quick adaptations. However, by planning ahead and reevaluating where your supply chain activities are performed, as well as your current processes, you can face these challenges head-on and lessen the impact on your operations and your bottom line. The record peak for oil occurred in July 2008 when prices reached $147 per barrel. This year's prices are topping $100 per barrel.? While prices at this moment are lower than that, it is unclear where prices will go in 2012. Whether it's up or down, you can prepare your supply chain for rapid fluctuations by following some key best practices: Flexible Infrastructure
Supply chains have undergone dramatic changes in recent years in response to shifting product needs, labor costs, taxes and environmental considerations. Having the flexibility to employ multiple routes to market is an important risk mitigation strategy, but it also provides the capability needed to rebalance product flows in response to changing input costs. Network Optimization
If oil prices increase, you may be forced to look at where distribution centers are located in relation to areas of key demand. For many companies, the combination of higher logistics costs and additional inventory requirements have already triggered the movement of supply chain activities closer to key markets. In an economic climate where the cost of fuel continues to rise uncontrollably, network optimization can help you strike a balance between inventory costs, labor costs and distribution center location(s). A network optimization analysis may result in the addition or closing down of distribution centers or even the movement of centers to more optimal locations. It is important to remember that frequent evaluations are necessary to ensure your supply chain model matches current conditions. Postponement Strategies
A postponement strategy based on your network optimization analysis can help increase the density of product coming from remote manufacturing locations. By sending unfinished or unpackaged goods into regions that are closer to the end consumer for final assembly, you can maintain inventory at a flexible level and reduce fuel costs. Shipping Practices
Making changes to your shipping practices can dramatically impact your bottom line, but can also benefit the environment. And there are several creative approaches to shipping available today. This can be as simple as establishing specific delivery dates with key customers which will enable you to consolidate shipping. You can also partner with a company that is not a competitor and that ships product to the same retail locations. Consolidating shipments between multiple brand owners can lead to a reduction in cost and an increase in shipment density. Organizations such as the European Logistics Users Providers and Enablers Group (ELUPEG) practice and promote collaborative shipping and encourage manufacturers across all industries to partake in an effort to improve asset utilization, carbon reduction, customer service, and more. Environmental Responsibility
Adopting sustainable supply chain practices can help you reduce costs and stay in line with social and corporate environmental responsibilities. One thing to consider is using alternative sources of fuel in your trucks and other vehicles. By using sources other than oil, you can potentially avoid fluctuating prices and the complexities that follow. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SmartWay Program aims to reduce environmental pollutants caused by traditional fuel sources by providing companies with cleaner alternatives, including ethanol, E85, Biodiesel, and natural gas and propane. Another area to evaluate is product packaging. Bulky product packaging made from synthetic materials and plastics is not friendly to your operations, shipping costs, or the environment. By redesigning packaging to be more compact and made from recyclable materials with little or no plastic, you can increase pallet density which reduces shipping costs, and also decrease your carbon footprint.

How to Start Your Information Diet [Information Overload]

How to Start Your Information DietAuthor Clay Johnson believes that, much like junk food leads to obesity and health problems, junk information is killing our productivity, efficiency, and worse, feeding ignorance. His new book, The Information Diet, discusses this problem in depth. In this post, Johnson details how to kickstart your Information Diet for 2012.

2012 is upon us, and a lot of people?people like Gina Trapani, Tim O'Reilly, and Ev Williams?are planning a New Year's resolution of an Information Diet. Here are some tips for how you can get started:

1. Keep a Journal

Start monitoring what it is you're taking in, and timing yourself. Just like keeping a food journal is helpful in starting a diet, keeping a media journal is helpful with a food diet. Get yourself a notebook and start measuring what it is you're taking in offline. When you're in front of a computer, use a tool like RescueTime.com to monitor your intake. Just knowing what and how much you're consuming will give you some idea of what to do next.

2. Cut the Cord

Trying to go on an information diet while you've got that super advanced cable package is like trying to go on a food diet while having a milkshake tap installed in your kitchen. You'll likely need to keep your data package, but do you really need all those television channels with great options like Hulu, Netflix and iTunes out there? It's also economical. Even if you buy every episode of a show you want to watch off of iTunes: If your cable bill is $150/mo, and a season pass to your favorite show on iTunes is $50, it's likely you won't buy three season passes a month. Plus, with cable companies constantly being rated some of the worst companies in America, it's nice to not pay them so much.

3. Set up your system

Finally, get your system set-up for the New Year?set your system up right with these tools and settings to get going:

RescueTime

Mentioned in the book, RescueTime helps track what you're working on, keeping a diligent count of what's happening on your computer. While it cannot track and account for your every moment, for those that are spending most of their time in front of a computer, RescueTime is the best tool. There's a free version available, and if you want to "go pro" it costs between $6-$9/mo. Be warned?what you'll be doing is sending every "Window Title" (the words in the titles of the windows for every application you use) to the RescueTime servers?while the data is secure, for those that are very concerned about their privacy, you may want to seek other options (see the Time Tracking Tools below for other options). RescueTime is cross platform?available for both Windows and OS X.

AdBlock

AdBlock Plus is available for both the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, as well as Safari. It's a simple browser extention that blocks advertisements on major websites. If you so desire, you can always turn the back on?but at least you're opting in to view advertisements, rather than having them thrown at you all the time. If you're an Internet Explorer user by choice, I strongly suggest you switch to Chrome or Firefox. If you're not an Internet Explorer user by choice, and are instead compelled to use Internet Explorer, then it's highly unlikely you'll be able to install IE Plugins?but here's an ad blocker for IE.

BlockPlus

The Red Notification on all Google pages, if you're a Google+ user, is a recipe for disaster. Every websearch becomes an opportunity to get sucked in to Google's social network. While Google gives you the ability to control what notifications get sent to you via email, the ability to control what's in that red box is not BlockPlus is a Google Chrome extension to simply remove that Red Box.

SaneBox*

Sanebox is like Google's Priority Inbox on steroids. Sanebox filters your emails and learns from your reading habits to make sure that only the emails you need to see right now make it to your inbox. It takes the emails that don't need your immediate attention and puts them into a folder called "SaneLater"?and close to the end of every day, it'll email you a digest of those email messages so that you can give them your attention. It's compatible with GMail, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook and IMAP email providers.

Facebook Settings

Let's take Facebook out of our email inboxes. While SaneBox should filter much of that stuff out, Facebook still makes your inbox a distraction trap. Visit Facebook's Notification Settings and uncheck the box next to "Send me important updates and summary emails instead of individual notification email." Then, visit each section of notifications on Facebook, and uncheck every box.

Same with Twitter. Uncheck every box on this page. Make Twitter something you have to check, not something that's pushed at you.

Desktop Notification Settings

Turn off all desktop notifications on your computer. If you're an Outlook user, turn its desktop alerts off. If you're an OS X User, and have somehow ended up with Growl installed on your computer, turn off all notifications.

Browser Settings

Whichever browser you use, set your homepage URL to "about:blank." This will make it so that whenever your browser starts, it starts with a blank page, not a lure to your most visited sites. I also add about:blank to my bookmarks bar in my browser so that I can quickly "turn off" the web from my screen while keeping the a browser open.

Gmail Settings

If you're a gmail user, go ahead and hide your unread counts. It might take you a while to get used to not seeing these numbers beckon for you, but they're hurting your productivity more than helping it. Enable the Hide Unread Counts setting in Gmail's Settings. It's in the Labs section about halfway down the page.

4. Grab the book

Finally, take a look at my book, The Information Diet in Hardcover(Out Jan. 18) or Kindle(Available now). A healthy information diet isn't just about tools to use on your computer, it's about habits and healthy choices. The book goes into detail about how and why we seek out the information we consume, and what we can do to change our habits to make them healthier. And it's a book you can judge by its cover.

Samoa skips Friday in leap across date line

The weekend came sooner than usual for the tiny South Pacific island nation of Samoa.

When the clock struck midnight Thursday, the country skipped over Friday and moved 24 hours ahead ? straight into Saturday, Dec. 31.

Samoans gathered around a main clock tower in the capital of Apia for the historic moment, applauding in celebration as the midnight hour struck to the wail of sirens and burst of fireworks. Drivers circled the clock tower blaring their horns, and prayer services were held across the country.

Samoa aimed to align its time zone with key trading partners in the Asia-Pacific region by shifting west of the international date line.

The time jump means that Samoa's 186,000 citizens, and the 1,500 in the three-atoll United Nations dependency of Tokelau, which also shifted, will now be the first in the world to ring in the new year, rather than the last.

The date line dance came 119 years after U.S. traders persuaded local Samoans to align their islands' time with nearby U.S.-controlled American Samoa and the U.S. to assist their trading with California.

But the time zone put Samoa and Tokelau nearly a full day behind neighboring Australia and New Zealand, which are increasingly important trading partners.

In June, the Samoan government passed a law to move Samoa west of the international date line, which separates one calendar day from the next and runs roughly north-to-south through the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Under a government decree, all those scheduled to work on the nonexistent Friday will be given full pay for the missed day of labor.

In addition to the economic advantages, the time jump is also expected to make the everyday rituals of family life a little more pleasant. Like many small Pacific island states, more of Samoa's people live permanently in other countries. About 180,000 Samoans live in New Zealand and 15,000 in Australia. The date line switch means that families split between the island nation and Australia or New Zealand can now celebrate important events such as birthdays at the same time.

"We've got to remember that over 90 percent of our people emigrate to New Zealand and Australia. That's why it is absolutely vital to make this change," Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sailele Malielegaoi told The Associated Press just hours before the country catapulted into the future.

Officials have begun work on changing maps, charts and atlases to reflect Samoa's new date line position. A postage stamp, featuring the phrase "into the future," has also been created to mark the switch.

Although generally embraced by most Samoans, the date change wasn't expected to happen without a few little glitches. Digicel, the most popular mobile phone service provider in Samoa, said the company would have to update its systems immediately after the time jump, leaving phone service dead for about 15 minutes.

"The interruption will only take a few minutes so we can adjust our system," CEO Pepe Fiaailetoa Fruean said. "So I would like to inform all of our customers to have alternative communication means available in case of an emergency."

Being a day behind the rest of the Asia-Pacific region has meant that when it's dawn Sunday in Samoa, it's already dawn Monday in adjacent Tonga and nearly dawn Monday in nearby New Zealand and Australia, as well as prominent east Asian trade partners such as China.

The original shift to the east side of the line was made in 1892, when Samoa celebrated July 4 twice, giving a nod to Independence Day in the U.S.

The date line drawn by mapmakers is not mandated by any international body. By tradition, it runs roughly through the 180-degree line of longitude, but it zigzags to accommodate the choices of Pacific nations on how to align their calendars.

Apple lead designer Jonathan Ive knighted for the New Year, how's your 2012 looking?

Apple Senior VP Jonathan (or Jony) Ive has been credited with fueling the company's resurgence alongside Steve Jobs with products like the iMac, iPhone and iPad, and for these successes has been made a Knight Commander of the British Empire as a part of the New Year's Honour's List. Aside from having a much better NYE celebration than yours, he'll be tapped on the shoulders by the Queen's sword and that will forever be Sir Jony to you, commoner (we'll see if he can make it through the ceremony without suggesting some tweaks for better balance and usability -- you can see his passion above as he eats an invisible sandwich pontificates about new iMacs). It's a bump up from his previous title of Commander of the British Empire and keeps the cycle going, as he released a statement appreciating the benefit of a "wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making".
